He sees your greatest need.

Luke 5:18–20

Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”

Do you think the man or his friends were surprised? Paralyzed and helplessly lowered into a packed room, Jesus first addresses this man's heart. Jesus saw that forgiveness is what he needed most. And right after? The man walked out.

I always think I know what I need from God. An easier day. Success or joy.

Yes, God grants good gifts... But he address what's most important first: your heart.

When have you been certain about what you needed from God, only to have your expectations reshaped?

Hab. 1:2–3 How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!”but you do not save? Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds. Read the context The prophet Habakkuk saw what you see — a world filled with injustice and pain. It tested his patience. Does it test yours? When you see pain and suffering... When you see hatred and anger... When you see...

Luke 12:35–37 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. Read the context The kids lean over the edge of the couch anticipating...
