The company Jesus kept.

Matthew 9:10-13

While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

If you wrote the story, you'd expect the God of the universe to visit Caesar or dine with the religious elite.

Instead, Jesus planted himself among the people the world called sinners... and it was no accident.

The sick needed the physician. The rejected needed restoration.

Jesus still visits outcasts. He came to you through His word and the waters of baptism.

He doesn't show up in person anymore. Today, he shows up through you. So go bring them Jesus!

Who do you purposefully spend time around... and is anyone in your circle still needing to meet the physician, Jesus?

Exodus 3:11-15 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” ... “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” Read the context I imagine Moses was frightened to see a burning bush and to stand in God's presence. God...

Psalm 119:71–72 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. The law from your mouth is more precious to me — than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. Read the context Almost everything has a price tag. With the right amount of money, you can have whatever you want. You can't earn your way into them either. They're freely given. Even in his trouble, God's Word was worth more than anything money could touch to the writer of this Psalm. Trouble strips back what is...

Romans 8:14–17 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in...
