Weekly Oakley Update — Week of August 17

Welcome to 167/168! Updates for our one hour of worship together. Encouragement for the other 167.

Here's what you need to know this week:

What’s God like?

Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.
Exodus 34:5-7

“I’m sure you guys will be fast friends. He’s fun. Into the same things as you. Easy to talk to.”

Whenever you meet a friend-of-a-friend, you get the spiel — this is what they’re like… this is why you’ll like them.

Who gives the introduction for God?

Moses stood before God and asked for a more formal introduction. “Show me your glory!” And the LORD obliged… but with a catch: You can’t see my face. God’s glory is too great for a sinful human.

No living being could give the introduction; only God himself… almighty and eternal… can tell Moses (or you!) who he is. But when God introduces himself you already know he’s being truthful.

He’s a God of compassion, mercy, and kindness. And even though this world is filled with sin, he delights in forgiveness.

Do you want a formal introduction with God? You have it. You’ll find it throughout God’s word. You see it in the person of Christ. Get to know the God who set aside that glory to save you.

This week… consider…

➡️What amazes you most about God’s willingness to set aside glory for the sake of human beings?

➡️ Who do you know that does not yet know the Lord? What words would you use to describe your God to them?

A Chance to Look Ahead:

Sunday, September 13th | Following 10A Worship

As we pivot to Sunday, Celebrate 1 Year of Worship, and look back... We're going to make some time to look ahead. Following worship on September 13th, we'll have a short Congregational Meeting. Here's what we'll talk about:

➡️ Meet new team leaders — the people stepping up to help carry BSO into year two

➡️ A quick look back — what God has done in our first year at Eastside Rec Center

➡️ What's next — plans and vision for year two, and how you can be part of it

I'll send you some questions to think about in advance of the meeting. For now, mark it on your calendar!

Three Great Invites Coming Up:

1. ☀️ Sunday Morning Worship Begins with an

Outdoor Service!

Starting on September 6th we’re changing our worship schedule. Each week we’ll have Worship @10A followed by coffee, snacks, and Bible Study @11:15A.

One September 6th we’ll be holding worship outside by the Rec Center. Think about that friend who couldn’t make Saturday night work… September might be a great time to invite them!

2. A New Round of “Foundations” Starts — September 13th

"Foundations" is a 7-week journey through the core teachings of the Christian faith. This class serves as a great way to deepen your faith and understanding of why we teach what we teach. This is also our membership course. Foundations will be our first Sunday Morning Study — My encouragement to you is:

➡️ Think about who you might invite: Do you know someone curious about the faith or our church… this class helps you learn alongside them.

✨ Imagine ✨ bringing a friend to Worship & Foundations… then talking about it afterwards at brunch 👀

➡️ Dig Deep Yourself: This is a chance for you to learn more about what we believe and why. Mark this on your calendar!

3. Sunday September 27th — One Year in Oakley 🎉

Can you believe it’s almost been a year since our first worship service!? Mark this date on your calendar! We’re planning a celebration that we'll invite our guests from the past year and the community, too! 👍 Are you interested in helping make the plans? Let me know by replying here!

We've got SO much to thank God for, and more things coming up to thank him for too. Check out everything coming up in the next few months that will be a blessing to you and our community 👇

Live Music in the Park 🎶

📍Ault Park
📅 August 20 | 6-10P
Ault Park's Summer Music Festival is back! 🎶 Come groove to live music from The Remains, a Cincinnati tradition 30+ years strong. Snag some tasty food and drinks, bounce around the inflatables, and let the kids loose on crafts and games from 6–8pm. Best part? It's totally FREE!

Lending a Helping Hand 🤝

Not an event… but an idea:

Our area has been hit with storms, flooding, power outages, and frustrating times in the last few weeks. What would it look like for you to lend a hand to a neighbor?

Help someone clean up their lawn. Drop off food for someone who had to toss their fridge.

As you go, you go with Jesus. You never know who you might meet!?

Serving in worship* ⬇️

Set-Up & Tear-Down will be two separate crews each week. Everyone is encouraged to help with tear-down when you’re available to lend a hand!

The Kids’ Table will have one lead teacher. A backup will be assigned that is asked to jump in if a) we have more kids than expected or b) the assigned teacher isn’t able to attend

Hospitality/Greeting will have an assigned person every week.
