Broken from the start.

Psalm 51:4–6

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
and justified when you judge.

Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

"The only things promised in life are death and taxes." I'm not sure about the taxes part, but the death part is a given. Why?

Sinfulness. A heart that rebels against God is what you inherited. Even before you took your first breath, you were marked by sin. And the outcome of sin is death.

On Ash Wednesday, we confront this hard truth... "Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

But that's not where the story ends. The ashes remind you of your mortality... but also point you to the cross, where Jesus took your death so you could have his life.

When has seeing your mortality pointed you to what's most important in this life?

2 Peter 1:16–18 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. Read the context "I promise! The story is true!" — There...

Exodus 24:9–12 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank. The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their...

Matthew 17:2–5 There [Jesus] was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well...
