Psalm 112:6–7

Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever.

They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

The phone rings in the middle of the night. Your boss asks for a one-on-one. You feel bad news coming.

But the things that feel big can be small. You can't be shaken.

Your eternity is held in the hands of a loving God. Your life belongs to him.

Bad news is still bad. But you have the best news of all to anchor you.

When have you heard bad news that was overwhelming? Why is it best to know God in those moments?

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds...

1 Sam. 16:6–7 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, β€œSurely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, β€œDo not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Read the context Samuel knew what a king looked like: Tall, strong, warrior-like. Or at least he thought he knew. But he saw the wrong thing. He...

1 Sam. 12:23–24 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. Read the context Samuel's farewell speech sounds like his other words: focussed on the Lord and on his deliverance. He didn't want the people to forget. There are many things you can pass on β€” a house, business,...
