Hearing her name was enough.

John 20:15–16

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

I can hardly imagine the emotions Mary was experiencing—the grief of watching her teacher die, the fear of not knowing what comes next.

And then, everything changed: All it took was Jesus saying her name.

Your Savior sees the deep grief caused by death. He sees the confusion caused by a world in disarray. And the one who defeated death will speak your name too.

Take heart.

When has grief or sadness made it difficult to recognize your Savior? What part of Mary's encounter brings you the most comfort?
