A not-so-shaky hope.

1 Peter 1:3-4

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.

When I tell someone I'm hoping for something, it usually doesn't come true: I hope the Bengals go 17-0. I hope I find a million bucks.

Christian hope is not so uncertain. When Peter tells you that you are born into a "living hope" it isn't uncertain. It's just something you have to wait for.

Hope is solid for you because the tomb is empty. That means you can count on your God's promise of heaven.

Why is it comforting to know that the "hope" you have in Christ isn't a "maybe"?

Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Read the context...

John 20:26-29 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Read the...

Psalm 16:9–11 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; — my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Read the context The living can do very little in a graveyard. You can plant flowers or clean a tombstone, but you can't stop the decay below ground. God can. Long...
