Blinded by... yourself.

Isaiah 42:18–20

“Hear, you deaf; — look, you blind, and see!
Who is blind but my servant, — and deaf like the messenger I send?

Who is blind like the one in covenant with me, blind like the servant of the Lord?

You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.”

God's Old Testament people — the Israelites — often failed to listen to his commands... Sound familiar?

When you look at God's law and listen to his word, you notice your hearing problems: a resistant heart... selfish motivations...

You don't need improved morals or motivations, you need a complete change. Jesus is the only one who can clean your heart and give you the sight you need.

He's a miracle worker.

When do you find your own desires getting in the way of seeing what God's word clearly says? How is Jesus' answer better than simply "try harder"?

For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling;he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. John 9:35–38 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.” Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Psalm 63:1–5 You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
