Laughable Promises.

Genesis 21

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.

Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”

Sarah had laughed when God first made the promise of a son. Now she can’t help but laugh again—because God did exactly what He said He would.

God has a habit of making promises that seem laughable: free forgiveness, a place in heaven, eternal life. Why would He give those things to you?

Because He loves you.

In Jesus, God makes the laughable your reality.

What ‘laughable’ promise of God is hardest for you to believe right now? When have you seen God turn your disbelief into joy?”

1 Sam. 16:6–7 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Read the context Samuel knew what a king looked like: Tall, strong, warrior-like. Or at least he thought he knew. But he saw the wrong thing. He...

1 Sam. 12:23–24 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. Read the context Samuel's farewell speech sounds like his other words: focussed on the Lord and on his deliverance. He didn't want the people to forget. There are many things you can pass on — a house, business,...
