John 1:48–50

β€œHow do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, β€œI saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

Then Nathanael declared, β€œRabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”

Jesus said, β€œYou believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”

Jesus surprised Nathanael. An ordinary-looking man was the promised Savior, his king.

The gospel doesn't appear flashy or impressive. It's simple. But you will see amazing things:

God bringing forgiveness to you in his Word and Sacraments. Hearts are changed. Consciences are freed.

What appears ordinary is the greatest story ever told.

Based on last night's sermon from John 1:43–51...

What wrong expectations have you had about Jesus? What amazing things do you see in the gospel that often go unnoticed?

1 Sam. 16:6–7 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, β€œSurely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, β€œDo not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Read the context Samuel knew what a king looked like: Tall, strong, warrior-like. Or at least he thought he knew. But he saw the wrong thing. He...

1 Sam. 12:23–24 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. Read the context Samuel's farewell speech sounds like his other words: focussed on the Lord and on his deliverance. He didn't want the people to forget. There are many things you can pass on β€” a house, business,...

When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines. They said to Samuel, β€œDo not stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the...
